Preserving the Past Through Precision Casting

For over 65 years, Boro Foundry has been producing high-quality architectural castings and heritage metalwork for some of the UK’s most iconic buildings. We collaborate with architects, restoration specialists and conservationists to recreate, restore and manufacture bespoke metal components that respect the original design and structural integrity of historic sites.

We’ve also partnered with internationally recognised sculptors to bring complex metal artworks to life. From intricate sculptures to large-scale design features, we advise on casting methods and materials to help realise each artist’s creative vision.

Our heritage portfolio includes cast iron guttering for prestigious buildings across London and the UK, as well as larger civic projects. One example includes a commission from a multi-million-pound civil engineering firm to supply nearly 50 large castings for a canopy installation at Kettering & Wellingborough train stations.

Each component — measuring up to 2 metres in length and weighing up to 300kg — required precision lifting and handling techniques to preserve the fine architectural detail. We developed a custom rigging solution that ensured surface quality and met the client’s demanding schedule.

Replicating Historic Details with Confidence

In another project, a renowned London museum required replacement ventilation grilles as part of a refurbishment. Originally built in 1873, the building offered only a single sample grille to work from. Using our in-house patternmakers, methoding engineers, and casting simulation software, we were able to reverse-engineer the piece and cast flawless one-metre-square grilles — first time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can you replicate historic castings without original drawings?

Yes. We often work from a single sample or broken casting. Using reverse engineering, patternmaking, and casting simulation software, we can accurately reproduce heritage components while preserving their original design details.

What types of architectural castings do you produce?

We manufacture bespoke architectural metalwork such as floor grilles, guttering, railings, chimneys, and structural components for heritage buildings and civic projects. We also cast sculptures and artistic pieces in collaboration with leading sculptors.

Do you work with conservation specialists and architects?

Absolutely. We regularly partner with conservationists, architects, engineers, and restoration contractors to ensure our castings meet both aesthetic and structural requirements for heritage projects.

How do you ensure fine detail is captured in decorative castings?

Our in-house methoding engineers and advanced moulding techniques allow us to produce intricate, large-scale components with precision. We also develop custom lifting and handling methods to protect surface detail during production.

Can you handle large or one-off heritage castings?

Yes. We’ve produced castings up to 2 metres long and 300kg in weight for projects such as station canopies and museum refurbishments. Whether it’s a single component or multiple large castings, we have the capacity and expertise to deliver.
